Alaska Highway Rest Areas

Bob Jameson – Kenai, Alaska.

Rest Areas on the Alaska Highway from Mile "0" in Dawson Creek, British Columbia all the way through the Yukon Territory are not the same thing as found along the interstate highways in the lower 48 states. While on the first few hundred miles of this trip you will find a few with running water and flushing toilets as you keep going these will give way to hand pump wells and vault style potties.

Camping in Rest Areas

Alaska Highway rest areas can double as an overnight rest stop when other camping areas are either full or for whatever reason are unavailable. Like anywhere you go, the rest areas along the Alaska Highway are not for camping per say but are for resting up before continuing along on any type of journey. The Alaska Highway rest areas are typically limited to a 12 hour stay although some we have visited had no time restrictions posted. We have overnighted in many and never failed to find room to stop. Most of the time they are very quiet and offer a great place to pull over and sleep.
