Alaska Highway Campgrounds
A visit to the Tetlin Refuge Visitor Center at Mile 1229 of the Alaska Highway is also one that comes highly recommended. The Tetlin Refuge Visitor Center is located just a few miles past Border City on the way into Alaska. From the visitors center you have an amazing view of the 682,604-acre Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge and the rugged snow capped Wrangell–Saint Elias Mountains and the Wrangell–Saint Elias National Park and Preserve lying just to the of Northway and the Tetlin Refuge Visitor Center. Moose, grizzly and black bears, wolves and caribou are frequently seen throughout the refuge.
There is a large parking lot and a line of restrooms as for years this has been a very popular stop for the tour buses from Holland America and Princess Cruises as well as from the independent tour companies that offer motorcoach tours of interior Alaska.
One of the most photographed Alaskan scenes is the magnificient Alaska food cache located in front of the center. Visitors take turn taking their pictures in front of this Alaskan icon with the most breathtaking backdrop that has made for many family Christmas cards for years. Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
As soon as you lay eyes upon the sod-covered log cabin with a huge viewing deck overlooking the Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge you will feel the immensity of the wild and remote Alaskan wilderness as it begins to reviel it's inner self. Once inside the visitors center cabin you are met with an impressive presentation of interpretive displays on wildlife, mountains and local Athabascan craftwork. There are demonstrations and lectures that take place on a fairly regular schedule. Take time to watch the great video ond if you plan on stopping for the night at Deadman Lake Campground just up the road there are nightly ranger talks too.
There are no restaurants or food services here so bring your own lunch and enjoy the scenery of this amazing location along the Alaska Highway.
