Alaska Highway Campgrounds - Border City, Alaska

Border City, Alaska

The first town you come to after crossing the Alaska Canada border on the Alaska Highway is Border City, Alaska. While not really a town it does offer you the first chance to fuel up with lower cost U.S. fuel prices. Border City, Alaska located at Milepost 1225.5 Alaska Highway is actually more of a one stop shop reminiscent of the old roadhouses of past; there is camping, lodging, restaurant and fuel all available in one convenient location.

The campground at Border City rests on a peninsula with Desper Creek surrounding three sides of the groomed lots. This clean campground offers all the services one needs from 30 and 50 amp electric to fresh water and sewer hookups too. There's gas, diesel and propane available to power up your coach. The restaurant offers a small diner style menu but the food is considered pretty good. There's a gift shop and foyer with seating plus rooms to rent if you want to get inside for the night.

Alaska Border Town

On the Canadian side of the border you find the town of Beaver Creek Yukon. While Border City, Alaska is more of an outpost than a town, Beaver Creek Yukon has everything one would expect in a northern town built around a border crossing. One of the stops we suggest travelers make is at the Beaver Creek Visitors Center. You can pick up a great deal of information on the Yukon, Alaska Highway and places you will see as you continue into Alaska from the border crossing on the outskirts of town.

The Tetlin Refuge Visitor Center at Mile 1229 of the Alaska Highway comes highly recommended and is located just a few miles up the road towards Northway and Tok, Alaska.
