Camping along the Alaska Highway

Bob Jameson – Kenai, Alaska.

Options for camping along the Alaska Highway are about as diverse as the landscapes you're passing through. There are formal campgrounds with hookups and paved parking, city campgrounds with local services, Provincial campgrounds that are always located in absolutely amazing locations and than there are the roadside pullouts where access to outstanding hiking, fishing and wilderness landscapes make you realize just how far you are away from the city's you left behind.

To experience as much of the Alaskan Highway's Canadian experience as possible I always suggest that everyone try at least one night in each of the various styles of camping while undertaking this one of a kind journey.

Camping in the privately owned campgrounds, most commonly called RV parks, is the most similar style of camping to what many are use to back home. The majority of these privately owned RV campgrounds offer electric and water hookups and many have sewer hookups for RV's too. The privately owned campgrounds will offer hot showers that can be quite welcomed by those traveling with you. They also have camping areas for tents but they're often may not be as private as what can be found in the less developed campsites of the Alaska Highway. As you get further up the highway and into the northern areas of B.C. and into the Yukon Territory, the habituated life begins to give way to the more bucolic and surreal reality of a life that can best be described through the experience of travel.

Now we're getting to the meat of this article, the camping options for those looking for campsites with a wilderness feel; far less developed and much closer to nature. Camping on the Alaska Highway offers plenty of this and is the real deal in getting back to the construction days of 1941 and experiencing as much of this wilderness as one can take.

Camping along the Alcan Highway

First off it is important to note that many people you meet will refer to the Alaska Highway as the Alcan Highway. the name Alcan is referring to the fact that the road travels through Canada in route to Alaska, someone some time ago shortened the name Alaska/Canada Highway to just Alcan for short. That being said, camping along the Alcan Highway is today referring to the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway from Dawson Creek, British Columbia to Beaver Creek, Yukon Territory.

Like anywhere you go, the rest areas along the Alaska Highway are not for camping per say but are for resting up before continuing along on any type of journey. Read Alaska Highway Rest Areas for more on what to expect.

Unlike years past, the availability of fuel, both gas and diesel, is relatively good as the number of Alaska Highway gas stations and their locations make this far less of a problem today as long as you follow a few pointers. Read more at gas stations along Alaska Highway to prep yourself for this journey.
