Alaska Highway Campgrounds

Bob Jameson – Kenai, Alaska.

Where are the campgrounds located and how much do they cost if camping in one of the Alaska Highway campgrounds found between Mile 0 and the Alaska border town of Border City, Alaska. We are going to cover the gas prices on the Alcan as well as the campground prices on the Alaska Highway too. Note the the two terms Alaska Highway and Alcan Highway are being used interchangabily as they are just different forms of the same name. Alcan is short for the origional Alaska Canada Highway name that was later shortened to Alaska Highway.

Alaska Highway Campgrounds

What do we define as a campground and what other options are there for camping along the Alaska Highway?

We are defining campgrounds as designated campsites by the Provincial Governments of British Columbia and the Yukon that offer camping, bathrooms, fire rings and tables but do not offer electric, sewer or water hookups at the individual sites. Most campgrounds will have gravel roads and campsites and offer a nice barrier between sites for privacy too.

Deadman Lake Campground located at milepost 1249.3 of the Alaska Highway offers 15 rustic campsites tucked away in the midst of a spruce forest along a ½ mile long gravel road with a circle configuration in the campground itself.

Lakeview Campground located at milepost 1256.7 of the Alaska Highway offers 11 campsites with picnic tables, fire pits, outhouse style toilets and there are garbage containers for campground use. This scenic campground on northeast shore of Yarger Lake .

Tok River Campground on the northern side of the Alaska Highway offers a small campground on the river banks of the Tok River about 4½ miles east from the town of Tok on the Alaska Highway headed towards the Yukon Border.

Big Creek Campground is one of the great opportunities available for your enjoyment. You will find Big Creek Campground at Milepost 647.5 (Kilometre 1042) of the Alaska Highway, access is located on the north side of the bridge over Big Creek.
